What Does the Bible Say About Oral Sex?

Posted on June 9, 2023August 16, 2023

The Bible has a lot to say about sex. It’s clear that physical intimacy is important for a healthy marriage. However, there’s also a lot of ambiguity when it comes to sexual activity in the Bible because some passages use figurative language.

Some Christians believe that oral and anal sex are natural within the confines of a marriage relationship. Others disagree.

1. It is a sin

Sex was created by God in Genesis 1. He told Adam and Eve to multiply, so they needed to have sexual intercourse. But just like everything else in creation, sex has been corrupted by sin. Therefore, sex is only good when it is done within the confines of marriage.

The Bible clearly states that lovemaking between a husband and wife should only take place in the bedroom. It warns that “the marriage bed should be kept pure, for he who sleeps with another man’s wife commits adultery” (Hebrews 13:4). This includes oral sex, anal sex, manual sex, and the use of sexual devices such as blowjobs.

In 1 Corinthians, Paul writes that Christians should not be sexually immoral. He specifically says that it is a sin to have “the passion of lust like the Gentiles.” Since the Romans he was talking to abhorred adultery, this could not refer only to sexual sins done before marriage.

Some people wonder if this includes oral sex before marriage. It does not. Oral sex, also known as cunnilingus in females and fellatio in males, is never discussed directly in the Bible. However, the Bible is clear that sex outside of marriage is a sin, just as rape and premarital sex are a sin. These are acts that defile a woman’s body and violate her dignity, which is why the bible warns against them.

2. It is unnatural

In the context of a marriage, oral sexual activity is perfectly natural. This type of intimacy has been used throughout history to express a deep love for one another and to create children. In fact, oral sex is more natural than manual sex, which can lead to STDs.

However, many Christians have been led to believe that all sexual activity should be saved for marriage and oral sex is a sin before marriage. This is because of the Bible passages such as Song of Solomon. These passages describe a lot of sexual activity that some would consider graphic but are written through poetic metaphors.

When reading this passage, it’s important to remember that in this time and place, men did not interact with women outside of their marriage. Rather, most women ran or helped run their father’s or brother’s household until they were married and then they would transition into their husband’s family life.

Therefore, it’s important to keep in mind that the biblical authors were not trying to show off and be erotic or disgusting when writing these texts. In the context of a marriage, the sexual activity in Song of Solomon is a very intimate expression of love between a husband and wife. Those who interpret these verses to mean that all sexual activity should be saved for marriage are doing so because they misunderstand the biblical context.

3. It is dangerous

Oral sex is not safe for either the giver or the receiver. If it is not done with proper protection or barrier methods, it puts both parties at risk for sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). Oral sex can lead to genital warts, HPV infection, cervical cancer, and more. It can also cause ingestion of intestinal parasites such as Giardia and bacteria such as E coli and Shigella. It can also cause anal inflammation and throat irritation.

Most people think that oral sex isn’t a big deal because the Bible doesn’t mention it explicitly. However, the Bible is very clear about what it considers sexual immorality. For example, it forbids sexual immorality with the father’s wife, with animals, and with unmarried men and women. It also outlines a strict code of conduct for married couples, comparing it to Christ’s relationship with the church.

Many Christians argue that the biblical prohibition on oral sex is due to the fact that it is unnatural. They point to passages such as Song of Solomon, which describes sexual pleasure with a woman’s hands and lips, to make the case that oral sex is permissible for married couples. However, these passages are written in poetic metaphors and are open to interpretation. Moreover, they are not a complete picture of sexual intimacy in the Bible.

4. It is unkind

There is a lot of debate over whether oral sex is a sin. Many Christians believe that it is because it violates the Bible’s teaching on sex and marriage. The Bible clearly says that sex is to be between husband and wife (Genesis 1:28) and that it should only take place in the context of marriage. It also teaches that sex should be loving and other-oriented. Some Christians equate sexual intimacy with the ancient cities of Sodom and Gomorrah and say that God destroyed these cities for their sexual immorality.

Nevertheless, the Bible is not prudish about sexuality. It describes what some people would consider graphic sexual acts through poetic metaphors. For example, the Song of Solomon is full of sensual language. For instance, in verse 2, the prospective bride daydreams about tasting her future husband’s semen in her mouth. She eats raisin cakes and apples, which are believed to be aphrodisiacs, as she daydreams.

The Bible also teaches that a person is more than the number of sexual partners they have. In fact, the Bible teaches that a person is created in the image of God and has maximal value and significance before God even if they never have sex with another human being. This view has profound implications for how we treat one another. We must learn to see others as God sees them and to treat them with dignity and respect.
